I am a client of Hargreaves Lansdown, one of the UK's leading investment platforms, and hold two tax-efficient investment accounts: a Self-Invested Personal Pension (SIPP) and a Stocks and Shares Individual Savings Account (ISA). Together, these wrappers allow me to benefit from tax relief on pension contributions and tax-free growth on ISA investments, making them well-suited to a long-term wealth-building strategy.
My primary investment vehicle is Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs), which offer broad market exposure at low cost through passive index tracking. Rather than selecting individual stocks, I prefer a diversified, low-maintenance approach consistent with long-term buy-and-hold principles.
My core holding is the FTSE All-World Index ETF, which tracks the performance of large- and mid-cap stocks across both developed and emerging markets worldwide, spanning over 3,000 companies in more than 50 countries. This single fund provides exposure to major economies, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, Japan, and Asia-Pacific regions, with the US typically comprising around 60–65% of the index by weight.
The FTSE All-World Index has historically delivered strong long-term returns, reflecting global economic growth over time. By holding this ETF within both his SIPP and ISA, it makes me benefit from compounding returns across decades, with no capital gains tax or income tax on dividends within either wrapper. My strategy prioritises all-time return over short-term performance, accepting the natural volatility of global equity markets in exchange for the wealth-building potential that long-term equity investing has historically provided.
